Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT OR WHO IS EMBRACE?
We are a direct primary care medical family owned and operated by a board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Chelsea Burgin, based out of Landrum, SC. We bring the care back into healthcare. We strive to understand who you are, your personal wellness goals, and how we can assist you with achieving a better state of health. This patient-physician relationship provides us the advantage of knowing how to serve you best in your time of need. It does not matter the hour of the day or the day of the week; if you need medical help, we are here for you.
WHY EMBRACE?
Embrace, as a word, encompasses who we are, a medical family welcoming you in to experience medical care through mindful medicine. We listen, we learn, we lead, and we love.

At Embrace, we take time to develop personal relationships with each of our patient members. As a result, when you need us, you know how to contact us, and we respond. We are a hassle-free direct primary care clinic ungoverned by health insurance or corporate care restrictions.

WHAT IS DIRECT PRIMARY CARE?
It’s all about the relationship, the true heart of medicine. Direct primary care [DPC] is a healthcare delivery model emphasizing the importance of the relationship between the individual/family and their physician. DPC is a growing movement in healthcare as primary care physicians and their patients face an increasing number of roadblocks in conventional care models.

DPC has been around since the early 2010s, enabling us as physicians to have protected time to be the quality doctor we want to be for our patients. To sustain a conventional insurance-based medical office, a physician must see up to 35 patients daily to cover operating expenses and earn a paycheck. The DPC model is lean, with a straightforward business model and a small medical team; it is sustainable and independent of health insurance.

WHY IS DIRECT CARE BETTER?
Ultimately, we can redefine frontline care at Embrace by providing accessible, accountable, proactive, and preventive healthcare. As a result, your savings grow exponentially as we are available to help you early and often.

History shows that DPC patient members have fewer emergency department visits, fewer specialist visits, fewer surgeries, fewer hospitalizations, and fewer prescription medications. Doesn’t that sound appealing?

WHY WOULD I PAY MONTHLY TO HAVE A PERSONAL PHYSICIAN?
Access. Accountability. Reliability. Relationship.

Committing to having a personal physician is a big decision. Consider your monthly cable TV/internet costs, cell phone bill, or dining expenses. How an individual spends their money is a personal decision and reflects their priorities.

If you are still determining how having a medical home in Embrace benefits you, please call our office. We would be honored to welcome you for a ‘meet and greet’ to get acquainted and help you weigh your pros and cons.

HOW DOES DIRECT PRIMARY CARE COST LESS?
Numerous reports show improved outcomes and reduced expenditure through the DPC model. For example, one 12-month analysis of 2000 patients in North Carolina revealed savings of $1.28 million. DPC offers fewer hassles, less paperwork, more time with patients to listen and understand, and more opportunities to facilitate the successful comprehensive management of medical conditions. At insurance-based medical clinics, the physician spends an estimated 43% of the day on needless documentation. At Embrace, we focus on you.
WHY IS HEALTHCARE SO EXPENSIVE?

To survive conventional insurance-based medical practices, many physicians have been bought up by larger health systems that receive higher reimbursement rates from insurance companies. As a result, many expensive layers within corporate care are unessential. They also tend not to protect or uphold the value of the patient-physician relationship. Removing interference (insurance companies and hospital system-run primary care offices) reduces primary care costs.

Examples of why conventional care is expensive:

  1. Insurance companies and hospital systems dictate the type of care doctors can give and how many patients they need to see.
  2. Some insurance companies have copays for each office visit.
  3. The cost of medical billing may exceed the actual bill.
  4. Hospital administrators are highly compensated.

DPC offices, like Embrace, provide the physician freedom to serve patients and practice medicine as we were trained. In addition, without third-party billing (insurance utilization), our office has a small team, less overhead, and thus more direct time to spend with our patients.

HOW ARE OFFICE VISITS MANAGED?
Stress-free! At Embrace, we are available for your routine and urgent needs. Schedule a visit directly through our communication app, request to be seen through our secure messaging, or call our office during business hours. Embrace practices mindful medicine. We respect your time and work hard to prevent waits. In fact, we do not have a “waiting room;” we have a “welcome room.” Once we establish our medical relationship with you, virtual care becomes an alternative to in-person care when appropriate.
WHAT DO EMBRACE PATIENTS DO FOR AFTER HOURS NEEDS?
Embrace has partnered with a telemedicine app that enables our patient members to contact our clinician(s) at any time, especially with urgent concerns. This is included for free in the monthly membership. This secure tool allows two-way communication via text message, video chat, and real-time picture sharing.
HOW DOES EMBRACE GUARANTEE QUICK ACCESS TO CARE?
At Embrace, our top priority is to provide all-around outstanding care for our medical family. Like a marriage, in sickness and health, we strive to be here for you, which includes protecting our time to remain available. We do this by limiting our patient members. Typically, a full patient panel in a DPC medical home includes 250-400 patients per clinician compared to the conventional 2000-2500 patient load. Embrace is all about quality, not quantity.
WHAT IF I THINK I HAVE AN EMERGENCY?
Embrace specializes in personalized primary care. If you believe you may be having an active heart attack or stroke, or other immediately life-threatening condition, we recommend you go to the emergency department nearest to you.

In times of uncertainty, we encourage our patient members to reach out to us right away so we can exercise our medical expertise paired with our pre-existing knowledge of our patients. We advocate for our patients and help them navigate the most appropriate next step in their medical care plan. We strive to avoid hospital-based services safely and responsibly.

DOES EMBRACE SEE NON-MEMBERSHIP PATIENTS?
We provide a la carte care services, including acute COVID care, allergy testing/treatment, genetic testing/consultation, and a personalized second-opinion consultation (in person or virtual as available).

With that stated, none of us are equipped to anticipate all of our future medical challenges nor how they will affect our families. With this in mind, at Embrace, we recommend patient membership sooner. We have limited patient capacity to protect access to our existing medical family. We prioritize the importance of a strong and trusting patient-physician relationship and aim to establish this before a medical crisis.

DOES EMBRACE ACCEPT HEALTH INSURANCE?
We welcome patients with all forms of health insurance. In general, 90% of DPC patient members have an insurance plan. Embrace does not bill insurance. Insurance plans are great for stroke management, heart attacks, cancer treatments, and car accidents with significant injuries. However, insurance plans are not great at day-to-day medicine, such as covering clinician access, accountability, phone calls, and text messages.
Due to limitations of health insurance policies, the financial exchange with our DPC model is between Embrace and the patient member. We decided to prevent outside entities from governing our protected patient-physician relationships.

At Embrace, specifically for individuals without insurance or seeking to change their approach to health coverage, we are happy to introduce you to complimentary pairing options to broaden your healthcare coverage beyond the scope of our primary care. High deductible or catastrophic plans work well with DPC practices.

CAN I USE MY HEALTH INSURANCE AT EMBRACE?
We accept patients as members no matter what insurance they have or do not have. Embrace does not bill insurance; as a result, if you currently have insurance Embrace will be considered “out of network.” This decision prevents outside entities from governing our protected patient-physician relationships.
WHY DO I NEED MEMBERSHIP TO A PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE?

In conventional healthcare, most people are accustomed to paying for their primary care through insurance on a visit-to-visit basis. The problem is that most primary care is patient-clinician dialogue, and it’s hard for insurance companies to know how to reimburse a conversation. This forces physicians to make you schedule an appointment each time you want to speak with them. Recently, physicians must see upwards of 35+ patients a day to keep their practices solvent.

At Embrace, we are free to dialogue whenever, wherever, and however long the patient may need at no extra cost. This significantly increases the quality of the patient-physician relationship. So much so that in one study, patients in a DPC membership model experienced:
● 40% fewer ER Visits
● 54% reduction in ER costs
● 24% fewer Hospitalizations

DOES EMBRACE SEE MEDICARE/MEDICAID PATIENTS?
We welcome anyone to join our medical family. Unfortunately, Medicare and Medicaid offer a low baseline of primary care services, making it hard to gain personal access to a primary care physician.

Embrace is an ideal medical home for the Medicare or Medicaid patient who values having unlimited access to a primary care physician that knows and cares about them. Medicare and Medicaid patients pay a monthly membership directly to Embrace, like all patient members.
Embrace can act as your advocate regarding specialists, tests performed outside of our office, and hospitalizations. In addition, Medicare or Medicaid may cover lab or imaging services we order when completed by an independent affiliate.

CAN HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS BE USED?

Membership dues are typically compliant with flexible spending [FSAs] and health reimbursement accounts [HRA], and generally considered compliant with health spending accounts [HSAs]. For more information: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-502

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT FOR A PATIENT WITH EMBRACE?
Our service agreement is for one year. If you are unsatisfied or wish to cancel your contract with Embrace, we require a 30-day written notice. Services already rendered (i.e., preventive exams) will be itemized for payment at market value. Any refunds will be granted after the service items are paid. Agreements auto-renew.
HOW ARE MEMBERSHIPS PAID?
Embrace accepts all major forms of automated payments including recurring electronic checks, debit, and credit cards.
WHAT ABOUT LABS, IMAGING, AND PRESCRIPTIONS?
As part of the DPC community, Embrace offers competitive prices on lab services and partners with imaging centers and pharmaceutical companies to meet our patients’ needs, including home delivery of chronic medications.
